You might have overlooked the Smahbox Cover Shot Ablaze palette when it was launched. I did to be fair. Then one day I was doing a rare bit of online makeup shopping (trying to be good), and it ended up in my basket. It’s funny how often that can happen.
Now it’s no secret that I’m a sucker for a warm toned palette and I’ve probably got all of these shades in various palettes, but I’m not sorry. This is a gorgeous little palette. The Cover Shot palettes are described as ‘purse-friendly, pigment-powered eye shadow palettes’. I have lots of large palettes so I like the fact that this is smaller and doesn’t take up much space. What has surprised me is that the pan sizes are still good and you’re getting a decent amount of product. Your brush will fit easily into the pan and they’ve not compromised at all. Two of the pans are larger, but they’re all a good size.
The Smashbox Cover Shot Ablaze palette contains 8 hot, desert-inspired shades and it gives me slight ABH Modern Renaissance vibes. For me, I can see this being a year round palette as I love warm tones. There are gorgeous golds and coppers for Summer and a berry and browns for Autumn … it’s more versatile than it looks.
Overall, I’ve been impressed with the pigment and the formula. There’s a nice mixture of finishes and whilst there are a couple of shades that feel slightly drier and thinner, but not massively so. The shadows wear well throughout the day and apply nicely. I have found that they perform better when used with an eyeshadow primer, but it still works well without one.
