Pixi Beauty have just launched their Mattelustre lipsticks and have kindly sent me three of the shades to try out. I’ve tried a few different Pixi lip products, and I like most of them, so I was intrigued to see how good these would be.
Now the name Mattelustre should give you an idea as to what the finish will be like. They’re demi-matte lipsticks although I found the lustre part is more evident than the matte. If you do want more of a matte finish, then you can gently use your fingertip to blot the lips. This does work, but they sill have an evident sheen.
Personally, I’m not the biggest fan of these demi-matte finishes – I prefer either a shine or a totally matte lip. The formula is nice and creamy and glides on the lips, and they do feel quite moisturising and hydrating on the lips. They have been designed to condition, plump and protect the lips, and your lips do feel smoother and slightly plumper. Don’t be expecting Kylie Jenner style lips … it’s not going to happen.
Considering the creaminess of the formula, the Mattelustre lipsticks are more pigmented than I had expected. It’s not intense, but it’s still impressive. You can build up the coverage a bit, but not too much as they are so creamy.
Pixi describe these as providing long-lasting colour, and I don’t agree. Even when using lip-liner as a base, I found that I was needing to re-apply every hour or so. I do think if they’d just produced matte lipsticks, then the wear time would have been much better … something in the hybrid formula has just slightly missed the mark.
One thing that I do really like is how these feel on the lips. They’re very lightweight to wear and feel almost like a balm on the lips. I feel like you’re sacrificing the wear time for the gentleness of the formula on the lips.
Each lipstick contains added peptides, hyaluronic acid and Vitamins C and E, so they’re not going to dry out your lips at all. I really do like how these feel to wear, and I do like that my very thin lips look slightly fuller, but I do wish they’d stay on the lips a bit better.
At £14.00 each, they’re not expensive, but I do think for that price that they could be better. I am a huge fan of Pixi Beauty, but these just didn’t live up to the expectations at all.
The shades are very pretty and if you don’t mind having to constantly top up your lip colour, then you’ll probably like these. I like them, but sadly, I don’t love them. A rare fail for me from Pixi.
