Regular readers of this blog will not that my hair is not my forte. Most of the time it looks straggly and a hot mess and it drives me up the wall. Thankfully, that changed this week. I was invited to the cutest salon to have a revamp and boy was it needed. I was gifted my cut and colour at The Blonde & The Bears, but all opinions are my own.
I will go into a bit more detail about the location of the salon at the end ( *spoiler* it’s beyond cute), but will start with the actual salon experience first.
The Blonde & The Bears use Aveda products and to start with Dominique, the owner, laid out some Aveda Chakra cards. She told me to pick the card I was most drawn to and I reached for Harmony. Interestingly, we are drawn to the area where we are lacking in life – after the week I’ve had, I really do believe this.
The lovely Dominque spritzed me with the most gorgeous smelling spray and then gave me a stress relieving head massage. I don’t normally like massages but it was so relaxing. After a discussion on what I wanted, she chopped off a good few inches and then the fun began. I wanted to go a lot shorter and add some blonde balayage (I have a feeling I will continue to add more and more blonde over the next few months).
Balayage was the perfect option for me. I don’t have the money or the motivation to constantly go and have my roots touched up and I want to ease myself into the blonde life gently. In the past I have rushed into bleaching my hair and it has ruined it, so I feel this is the best way for me. The aim is to have quite a lot of light blonde hair, but as I am naturally dark, I do think this slow and gentle approach will work well.
One the bleach was added and I was foiled up like a Christmas turkey, we left it to develop before it was washed off. Dominique used the Aveda Color Conserve shampoo and conditioner and then added a toner to give the colour a more even tone. To say I was relaxed during this process is an understatement. I love having someone else wash my hair and Dominique massaged my head and neck which almost sent me to sleep.
Whenever my hair gets to a certain length, I always find myself getting it cut a lot shorter and this was no exception. I have no skills when it comes to styling my hair and when it is shorter, I do find I make more of an effort with it. I chose to go for a bob that sits just above my shoulders with it being longer at the front. This is a style that I have had before and I know how to look after it.
My hair used to be so lovely but years of messing about with it, combined with the menopause, has left it’s mark. I have fine hair but a lot of it and since the hysterectomy it falls out everywhere. Mick will definitely be happy that there’s now less to cover the bed, the car, the shower ….
After the cut, Dominique then used the Aveda Brilliant Damage Control to protect my hair from the heat of the hairdryer. She also used some thickening tonic and some Conflixor (liquid gel) before blow drying my hair. This was then finished off with a bit more trimming and tidying up and the most amazing smell Aveda Air Control hair spray.
I have used Aveda products before and do really like them, so it was nice to have their products used on me. Bleaching your hair can be a bit scary, but Dominique really took her time to get me the best results, which I appreciate. I love the finished job and I know I will be getting her to do my hair again.
I would say the finished result is more of a caramel / honey blonde, although it looks a lot blonder in certain lights. Next time I go to The Blonde & The Bears, I think I will have some lighter blonde put through the balayage although I will leave it for a few weeks so I don’t damage my hair. Dominique really listened to what I wanted and I am so glad to be rid of that straggly hair I’ve been rocking for months.

The Blonde & The Bears is located at Cedar Farm Galleries in Mawdesley, Lancashire. It was about a 30 minute drive for us and was well worth it. If you live in the North West I highly recommend that you go pay them a visit.
If you book in with one of the senior stylists (Nicole or Dawn), use the code down below for a 20% discount off your first visit.
To book an appointment, call them on 01704 822088. They are open Tuesday to Saturday and you won’t regret going.
Also, I can’t not mention this gorgeous boy. Meet Pele – he is Dominque’s dog and he kept Mick company whilst I was being pampered. He is so cute and adds to the relaxed vibe of the salon.
As promised, I will show you where The Blonde & The Bears is located. Bare in mind it was torrential rain for most of our visit! We will hopefully be going back next month for a proper look around, but it is the sweetest little place.
Cedar Farm Galleries is a collection of unique and indecent shops and I never knew it existed. It really is a hidden gem. There are galleries, a farmers market, a beauty salon, a chocolate shop, a cafe …. there is a lot to do and if you live up my neck of the woods, you need to visit!
I’d like to give a huge thankyou to Dominque for my lovely experience (and for keeping Mick in hot drinks and biscuits). Seriously Bunnies, if you live in the North West you really want to go to The Blonde & The Bears.
